Day 15 – Medias

After a tour of the fortress here in Marosvasarhely (Targu-Mures in Romanian), we left at about 10 am for Sighisoara – a castle, fortress complex which is one of the largest in Europe completely intact. After a quick tour of the grounds, we had a great lunch – mostly pizza. We encountered more Roma (Gypsies) than on most other days, so we occasionally had guards for the bus (see photos) and all of our wallets remained with us – not for lack of trying on the part of our “friends”…

Our tour schedule changed a bit from our written plans of earlier times and we continued our journey to Medias for an evening concert. Medias is a large Saxon town with a German Lutheran congregation. Gerhard, our host, greeted us warmly and our final church concert was the main event in town today. The church was full of tapestries (actually they were Muslim prayer rugs – and museums covet their collection!), the

building was started in the 13th century and finished in the 14th century. The pulpit and organ were from the Baroque period and were stunning works of art. Some of the wall murals from the early Catholic Church roots had been recently restored and the whole building was an art gallery inside a working church.

The dinner that followed was schnitzel and potatoes and delicious! While we have been hanging out mostly with our Hungarian hosts here in Transylvania, we loved our German day. And all of this in Romania… The concert was interesting when it came time to talk. I began in English, Andrea translated it into Hungarian and Romanian and then Gerhard translated finally into German. What a cultural mixture we have encountered.

Tomorrow we leave for Hungary and a concert in the Debrecen Prison. It will be the final concert of our trip. After Debrecen, we will be tourists for a few days before departing for home. Mo updates will follow when Internet is once again available. See you all soon!
